GrowWithFlow conference (recap 5): A practical approach to content strategy

Bijgewerkt op: 10 uur geleden

Last November, over 80 technical communicators, information architects, and documentation aficionados broadened their horizon at GrowWithFlow, Flow’s highly irregular but equally appreciated technical communication conference. Here is one of the highlights: Flow’s practical approach to content audits and content strategy.

A drawing of a lighthouse with two seagulls flying by.

New content solutions are everywhere and each comes with its opportunities as well as its challenges—out-of-the-box solutions are rarely that out-of-the-box. So how do you get started re-examining your content strategy in a way that is actually practical and feasible

Old-fangled, new-fangled, or just fangled?

Many companies prefer the comfort of tried-and-true content methods. They save their content on drives, copying documents to create updates and working to maintain oversight over multiple variants and versions. Others have taken the leap to new technology and are implementing intelligent content management systems with content reuse and built-in versioning.

Each approach has its advantages, but also its challenges. The old method might leave you struggling to keep track of document versions, but the problems are familiar and seem less daunting than implementing change—the devil you know. On the other hand, the transition to a new system can feel overwhelming as you struggle to decide which licenses to buy or which systems to commit to.

Of course, there’s also the third option, where you reevaluate your existing approach and make changes according to your evolved needs. But that takes time and everyone already has so much on their plate.

If any of these struggles sound familiar, you might need a new content strategy
