Moving an EPUB file onto an iPad

Say you’ve created an EPUB file of your manual on your Windows-computer. How do you transfer it to your iPad?

The process is described here, or further down at Procedure.

The webpage has screenshots of an older version of iTunes. These are the most recent screenshots:

These are instructions on how to transfer a DRM-free EPUB formatted eBook onto your iPad for reading in iBooks.

  1. Download the EPUB file and save it to your desktop. In this example, we will download the iPad Programming book by Daniel H Steinberg and Eric T Freeman.
  2. Launch iTunes by clicking its icon in the dock.
  3. Click File > Add to library.
  4. Select the eBook file from your desktop and click Choose.
  5. Select Books from the list of libraries on the left.
Notice your book is now listed.
  6. Connect your iPad to the computer and select it from the list of devices on the left.
  7. Select the Books tab.
  8. Check the Sync Books checkbox.
If All books is selected, then all your books will be transferred to the iPad. If Selected books is selected, you will need to look below for the newly added book and check the checkbox next to its title.
  9. Click Apply or Synch at the bottom right of the window.

You may receive a warning that this will erase all the books on your iPad if this is your first books sync. Click Sync Books.
Once the sync has completed, you can open iBooks on your iPad to read your newly transferred title.

If you do not have iBooks on your iPad, you can download it free from the App Store.
